This scooter purchase was supposed to keep me off CL for awhile, instead it’s done the opposite! A red Monster 1200 would look pretty good parked in front, no? Speaking of parking, a perk of my neighbor living in Arizona most of the year is having free reign to leave a bike in front of their door.
Covered parking!
I put the Miata up for sale again, and within minutes a guy asked if I’d accept trades. I said only if he had a newer M onster or a Tacoma. He offered a new Honda CBR650, which... Is actually a lot closer to what I want than I would have expected from the first random trade offer! I’m not taking him up on it, but I do find the newer CBRs quite attractive.
Starting the scooter first thing in the morning when it’s 31 ° F is a bit tricky, but I’m guessing that’s normal for a 2-stroke? Also seems like I need to let it idle a few minutes when the outside temperature is low otherwise it will die when I give it throttle.
I rode to work yesterday and quickly realized I don’t really have good gear for cold-weather riding. That wind finds ways through each and every little exposed flap.
Tried locking up front and rear brakes today on the wet ground just to get a better feel for how much braking power I have. The answer is plenty, as long I’m not going downhill.
There’s a series of dirt paths that connect two roads near me, and I may or may not have been using said dirt paths as shortcuts. Some of the paths go right over the crest of small hills, so it’s not impossible that if I hit them fast enough I could get some hang time....
My favorite part of the scooter so far?
Insurance.
$240 full coverage, and that’s including various add-ons. Fo r the entire year. As a not- quite 25 year old male in a Metropolitan area, I didn’t realize rates that low were possible...
Gas mileage is over 75 mpg so far, although with just 80 miles of riding (and most of it full of ho oning) that number probably isn’t super accurate.
I still can’t get over how rediculous this thing sounds. Picture a bigly, older competition spec dirt bike, take that sound and stuff it in an adorable little moped.
Boom. It’s magical.
It’s also the cause of a lot of weird looks from dudes in lifted trucks. About half of them nod/smile/wave, while the other half look super confused.
Anyhoo, that’s enough rambling.
Here’s a totally unnecessary promise to myself to end things off. If the Miata sells within the week and this M onster is still for sale, I’ll go talk to the owner.

This may blow your mind then, my insurance rate is a bit over a quarter of yours for my Zuma.
The warm up time is very normal in cold temps for a little carbed engine.
Glad you're enjoying the scooter. I hereby gift you an honorary membership in the Born to be Mild Scooter Gang.

Carbs in general can be rough when it’s cold but yeah the two stroke design from 1970 isn’t helping. It would be worth checking if the choke is fully operational.

Everyone says that two wheels are addicting and you can’t have just one.
I think it’s true. Myself I’m still looking for something small, just a bit quicker and capable of riding at 60mph for 10-20miles if I feel like it. I also want something that weights less than 250lbs and maybe can do some light off roading.

That does blow my mind. I like this world of tiny, low-dollar two-wheelers...

I was astounded by how cheap the insurance w as for my Honda Cub, my plan is $75 for the whole year. It’s just for state minimum coverage bu t it includes $3k allowance for aftermarket pars, which is six times more than the bike is worth.

They are really fun, and useful in a congested urban car-hating big city.
I have a Stella as well. Put her away in the basement, but it’s been so warm up here this weekend she’s doing her groundhog act.

I think I paid something like $137 for the year for both my Zuma, and my wife's Vespa.

Imagine living in Wi, and not having to register or insure a 49cc. Or have any motorcycle license at all.
I’ll need one when I get a bigger bike tho.

Of course insurance is cheap on a Honda. It’s because Honda riders are nice.
You meet the nicest people on a Honda.

I don’t know if you’re taking suggestions but I think your Scooters name should be Wooderson.
Named after Matthew McConuaghey ’s character from Dazed and Confused.
Or alternatively Melba Toast.

These DTs seem to be very common, and relatively cheap. Even the 250s I’ve found are at or under 3k. In restored or resto-modded condition.

Here in Nova Scotia
you need a bike license for anything over 49cc. If you get your license on something less than 125cc you are locked on only bikes that large or smaller. You can take your test on a larger bike and then you can ride any size engine though.
You can ride a bike with no license under 49cc if it has pedals for non-engine-powered propulsion and it limited to a top speed of 35kph though.
